Oaklawn Race Track

McLaughlin loved to see his horses canter and run. In 1934 he reopened the Oaklawn race track. Although gambling on the horses was illegal, the reopening was a massive success. It brought in considerable revenue to the city and people came from all around to see the races.

Due to its success, the state legislature changed the law in 1936 to allow Oaklawn to operate as long as some of the revenue came to the state.
