Camp Beauregard, Louisiana

America entered World War I in 1917. McLaughlin tried avoided enlistment, using tactics from business affairs to his campaign to be re-elected as city attorney. Eventually drafted, he deliberately ignored orders, seemed confused, and belligerent while attending boot camp. The drill sergeant sent him to the base hospital for psychiatric evaluation. The doctors found nothing wrong but Leo was sent back repeatedly for drooling, confusion, and fainting. Each time, doctors evaluated him and advised he was competent for service. McLaughlin spent the majority of his basic training in the hospital and was sent overseas.

When McLaughlin arrived overseas he did not see any military action due to his antics. He was so home sick for Hot Springs his mother petitioned Senator Joe T. Robinson to discharge her son.
