All in the Family

George McLaughlin

McLaughlin used his office to defend his brother, George McLaughlin, from a murder charge. McLaughlin hired his brother as an enforcer to watch the gambling clubs and report suspicious activity. However George McLaughlin was known for being violent and a little short on brain power. One night he assaulted Fats Long, a professional gamber, who later died due to injuries. There were several eye witnesses and Mayor McLaughlin worked to keep his brother from prison.

Six of the witnesses disappeared before the trial. Several people said they saw someone give each of the six witnesses large sums of money, however it was hearsay. Because this scandal happened during the Depression, money and jobs were scarce. With the promise of city jobs, Mayor McLaughlin bribed some of the jury members. George McLaughlin was found innocent and many were furious.
